Works in progress

This is a list of projects I am currently working on or ongoing projects.

Three poems of John Clare (baritone, piano) This cycle of poems for baritone soloist and piano includes I am, Early nightingale, and Love lives beyond the tomb.

The mystic trumpeter (mezzo-soprano, trumpet, piano) This cycle, using the poem of Walt Whitman, is a dialogue for mezzo-soprano soloist and off-stage trumpet.

Spinning Winter (soprano, piano) This 18-poem cycle, in four sections, uses new texts by poet Jennifer Knoblock.

Songs of Shakespeare’s Ladies, set 1 “Ophelia” (SSAA, harp) This is the first of three sets of pieces for treble chorus focusing on texts of Shakespeare’s female characters. The other sets will be Lady Macbeth, and Ariel. The three sets can be performed separately or as a large concert work, bridged by a setting of “Sing Willow,” from Shakespeare’s Othello.

My Childish Days (musical theatre) This ongoing project with British playwright David Owen-Bell tells the story of an incident in the childhood of Robert Louis Stevenson.

The Fungi of Yuggoth (unstaged opera) This large work for Mezzo-Soprano and Baritone soloists, Chorus, and chamber orchestra explores the 36-part epic poem of the same name by H.P. Lovecraft. This epic poem set the basis for Lovecraft’s Cthulu Mythology. The “opera” sets the entire poem in a weird and wild labyrinth of music.

The Raven (SATB, Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Tenor, Baritone, Bass soloists, orchestra) This large-scale work is best described as a “Gothic Psychological Oratorio.” Using the texts of Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven,” “Lenore,” “Annabel Lee,” and “To One in Paradise,” the piece shows the unraveling of an unwitting Narrator, who, still mourning the loss of his wife Lenore and his daughter Annabel Lee, is plagued by a mocking Raven.
